Jane Wrightson replies to rumours about the fate of RNZ

There has been considerable speculation in New Zealand that the fate of RNZ and TVNZ will soon be decided by the NZ Government.

In an article today by Jane Patterson of rnz.co.nz it has been reported that there is a proposal to dis-establish both broadcasters and create an entirely new public media entity.

According to the article, RNZ understands there were three options: merge the RNZ and TVNZ newsrooms, put more money into New Zealand On Air, or the third, preferred option now heading for Cabinet – most likely in early December.

In reply to the conjecture, CEO NZ On Air, Jane Wrightson, released the following statement.

You will be aware of the speculation in media about potential options for TVNZ and RNZ.
NZ On Air is taking an active part in discussions with officials about a range of options. We have welcomed the opportunity to have input and the clear commitment from this government to a variety of strong public media.

We will not comment on or speculate as to what decisions may be considered or reached by Cabinet, as a paper simply has not yet been finalised.

However we were reassured as recently as last week, at the launch of our new research by Minister Faafoi at Parliament, with his statement that ”NZ On Air will continue to be an important part of a strong, effective and sustainable public media environment supporting quality New Zealand content.

Ngā mihi
