Good humour is good business: Zara and Troy talk about their journey through comedy and radio

Former 92.9 Perth breakfast hosts Zara and Troy Swindells-Grose are featured in the latest Intensely Inquisitive podcast, where they tell Orion Kelly how the humour they used as actors and on radio can be useful in the corporate world.

Zara & Troy also spoke of a possible return to radio one day, saying they “absolutely miss it.”

Zara and Troy are the Directors of Great Talk, which offers a variety of communication and engagement programs.

The pair worked together with Orion on radio in Perth over a decade ago, when Zara and Troy hosted breakfast.

“We still get letters and presents from listeners who heard us all those years ago. I can’t believe how important radio is to people in the community,” they told Orion in the podcast.

They discussed their journey to radio and onwards, to what they are doing now.

Troy trained as an actor, then worked in a Brisbane restaurant where the waiters were also actors in the show. The restaurant owner was Zara’s brother. Later Zara joined the business, which is where she met, and eventually married Troy.

Zara was asked to join B105, and said “can my husband come with me.” That began both their on and off air relationship. Zara and Troy have now been married for 27 years.

Breakfast radio is “not always a nurturing environment,” so the pair found they couldn’t keep up their on-air work and chose to leave the radio industry to develop their business.

Their current business brings their skills to the workplace, where they help companies build a better work culture through comedy and also train professional speakers to deliver great engaging stories.

“Find the sweet spot between obsession and enjoyment, joy and positivity to get where you want to go,” Zara told Orion.

In the podcast they tell Orion that humour and storytelling are important skills for success in the corporate world and explain how they train corporates to use those skills to improve. Listen to the podcast here and view Zara’s Ted Talk below.
