Gold top, Hot Tomato gains in latest Gold Coast survey

In the Gold Coast survey, just released today, Gold FM again topped the market with 17.7% and  Sea FM was second on 14.6%, but both Southern Cross Media stations lost ground, while Hot Tomato, at 14.0%, was the only local station to gain share. Triple J was in fourth place at 6.0% with ABC local station 91.7 fifth on 4.1%.

The survey was conducted between Sun August 8 and Sat October 2, 2010, before the Commonwealth Games began. Southern Cross Media stations and Hot Tomato were both very active with promotions, including overseas trips, during the survey (see our earlier stories).

Gold dropped 1.5 share points, gaining some younger listeners, but losing share in its target over 40 demographics. Sea FM dropped most in the survey, down 2.1 share points overall, with a gain in the 10-17 demographic, but losses in other age groups.

Hot Tomato was up 0.1 on the strength of gains in the 18-54 demographics. Triple J gained 1.5 share points overall with a lift in its 18-54 demographics. ABC91.7 dropped 1.3 share points, losing ground in all demographics except 65+.

Radio National gained most this survey, up 1.5 share points to 3.7%.

Sea FM still dominates the 10-24 demographics, and also won 25-39s just ahead of Hot Tomato which is gaining in that demographic. Gold won the 40-64 demographics and Brisbane ABC station 612 won the over 65s.

Breakfast was won by Gold FM’s Richard and Bridge (pictured), followed by Sea then Hot Tomato, which had a significant lift in that timeslot.

Gold won all workday shifts, but not as convincingly as in past surveys and Hot Tomato moved into second place in those morning, afternoon and drive shifts. Sea FM won evenings and Gold won weekends.

Brisbane stations are also heard on the Gold Coast with Nova 106.9 of most interest in the out of towners segment. Nova gained 1.1 share points, the second biggest gain of the survey, to score 2.4%.

In his first survey as new manager of Southern Cross Media’s Gold Coast stations, Paul Bartlett is happy with the results, which are a tribute to station staff. Staff at Hot Tomato are also pleased with their gain and their improvement in at work listening. See media releases below.
