Gold medals for ABC at New York festival

ABC Radio has won three of the thirty-four Gold WorldMedals at the 2003 New York Festival’s Radio Programming and Advertising Competition.

The ABC’s tally was second only to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and bettered the total achieved by a host of other media outlets from around the world.

ABC Radio National’s Science Unit won two Gold ‘WorldMedals’. In the Science and Technology category, the Gold WorldMedal was awarded to Lynne Malcolm, Wendy Carlisle, Natasha Mitchell and Richard Aedy for the four-part series “Science in a Suitcase: Innovation In South East Asia”, first broadcast on the Radio National’s The Science Show program in August 2002.

In the Health and Medical category, the Gold WorldMedal went to Natasha Mitchell and Sue Clarke for the four-part series “A Mental Health Odyssey in India”, first broadcast on Radio National’s All in the Mind program in March 2003.

“These latest awards continue the ongoing and frequent recognition of the quality of Radio National programs when judged against the world’s best.”

In the Best News Program category, 720 ABC Perth’s Morning presenter Liam Bartlett and Promotions Producer Adam Sallur won a Gold WorldMedal for their special report on “Investigative Journalism”, an insightful report on the state of news programming. The program was also selected as one of only five ‘Grand Prize’ winners.

The New York Festivals organisation runs six international media awards competitions. Entries to each of the competitions are judged by a worldwide panel of peers in the respective industries. In 2003, a total of 1,100 entries were received for the Radio Programming and Advertising Competition from 30 countries.
