Global Rugby League website launched

A new website for Rugby League supporters was launched this week in time for the kick-off to this year’s footy season.

Global Rugby League.com is the brainchild of radio broadcaster Josh King and has been in the making for almost eight months. According to King, this venture is “an opportunity to promote the game even further on the international sporting circuit.”

“The game is loved by so many people in Australia, New Zealand and England not to mention Papua New Guinea, I started feeling sorry for all the sports fans out there who may not be aquainted with Rugby League in places like the US, Canada and a whole stack of other big countries.”

“I look at soccer team Manchester United as an example. I’ve never been to one of their games and they’re a team that geographically lives in England. But they’ve still been able to build a base of supporters down under and in other parts of the globe. Often I’ll ask myself, why can’t we do that with teams like Parramatta or Canterbury? The answer is we can by spreading the good word about our game to all corners of the globe. What’s the most cost effective means to achieve this? You guessed it… the Internet.”

One “exciting feature” of Global Rugby League.com is the launch of Radio Rugby League, a 15 minute weekly program broadcast online. The show is presented by Josh King and footy co-host Martin Lester. Regular features include a segment called “Head To Head” where the two hosts will thrash out an issue affecting the sport until they either run out of breath or time.

Other parts of the broadcast will include one on one interviews with NRL players, editorials, Rugby League music and reports on other competitions from around the world including the English Super League and the American National Rugby League. “The combination of radio and rugby league was an idea too hard to ignore.”

“I love rugby league and I enjoy radio. I thought why not combine the two and be my own boss… My gut feeling is their is the right amount of humour, strong topics and enough creativity for us to become another source of information and entertainment in the Rugby League world as well as radio.”

Josh King will also be
assisting Hawkesbury Radio 89.9FM with their Rugby League programming and is also in the process of organising a new football segment for a
commercial station in North-Western NSW.

Radio Rugby League has also enlisted the help of well known entertainer, Franky Valentine, to produce the show’s theme song and will include Stan Zemanek as a tipster in the “Pick A Winner” tipping competition. Global Rugby League will commence covering the NRL season as of Friday March 14 2003 and will continue to report on each round of the English Super League and other competitions around the globe.
