Geoff Field’s new challenge

Journalist and muliti-ACRA nominated newsreader Geoff Field has accepted a career challenge.

He’s joined the University of Technology in Sydney. He will be a full-time mentor to journalism students and news director of 2SER FM.

He takes over from Kirsty Meyer who has accepted a job as a content director at a radio station in the UAE.

It was widely speculated over the weekend Geoff would be leaving 2SM following a Facebook post.

Geoff said, “Having been in commercial radio since I left school in Nowra at the age of 16, this is indeed a new career path and something I’m really looking forward to.

Geoff started his new position this morning and did his last shift at 2SM on the weekend.

“Station manager Melanie Withnall will allow me to shape the news you’ll be hearing on 2SER, and I intend bringing my skills to the airwaves as well as training and fostering the talent of up and coming journalists.

“I look forward to working with breakfast presenter Nic Healey and chatting about the daily news, as well as being able to have the time to teach students the tricks of the trade!

“I had many years at 2Day FM and before that at 2GB, so I hope to bring a wealth of knowledge to my new position.”

Geoff leaves 2SM on a good note with the station’s news director Dianne Coveny-Garland saying, “It was a pleasure working with Geoff. His work ethic and sense of humour are second to none. Of course there was that time he inadvertently hung up on the deputy prime minister (twice) and still managed to get the news to air on time!”

Of his days at 2SM, Geoff says it allowed him to get back to his roots and write and read news in a busy environment, while allowing him to travel with his partner Jason.

“One of the things that astounds me, is the loyalty I’ve been fortunate enough to receive after being on-air for more than 20 years in Sydney. Not a day goes by without someone on the street, a taxi driver of a person in the supermarket telling me they remember the gay wedding or even the days when I used to read for Derryn Hinch and Ita Buttrose at 2GB, I guess that makes me a very lucky man”, said Geoff.
