Funding boost for local news in WA’s Peel Region

In Mandurah, 97.3 Coast FM and 91.7 The Wave are the recipients of a $122,000 government grant.
 
They are part of 107 regional news outlets across the country are set to benefit from the Government’s $50 million Public Interest News Gathering (PING) program, providing much needed support to regional television, newspaper and radio outlets during COVID-19.
 
The funding will assist the stations in covering the wages of journalists, thereby enabling them to maintain their comprehensive local news service whilst dealing with the impact of COVID-19.
 
Member for Canning Andrew Hastie said the funding will enable the radio stations to continue to serve the community with high quality news and information.“Quality journalism is very important for local communities. Reliable public interest journalism keeps our communities informed and connected. We need healthy media businesses and competition among outlets to maintain the quality of the news we receive.”
 
“This grant will help keep local reporters working in our region. Their strong record of serving Mandurah and the Peel region with fair-minded reporting of the news make Coast FM and Wave deserving recipients of this grant.”
 
Under the funding program $12 million will go to radio stations with $20 million for television and $18 million for publishing all across regional Australia
