Feedback on Community Radio ratings item

Jason Nightingale from 997fm writes to radioinfo in response to an earlier item on Community Radio ratings figures in the Sydney market:

I’ve been an avid supporter of your site for years and until today have never read such rot referring to the story about the so called ratings success by community radio in Sydney.

This Robertson character is typical of how naive the community radio sector in this country is, claiming a majority of the missing ten percent really shows his lack of understanding of not only the Sydney market but the industry as a whole. To actually believe that the increase in other FM on a survey result has something to do with babbling amateurs as opposed to the professionalism,(eg: Rob Duckworth, Stuart Cranny ect ect..)of new commercial stations on outer fringe of greater Sydney really reinforces the lack of pro-active and industry educated management in community radio.

I’ve never laughed so much in my life. Once again thank you Wise Guys

and Garry Anderson, Station Manager of Life-FM 100.1 Bathurst writes:

Oh Dear! … how out of touch!

Yes, the community radio sector has a small listener base, but the numbers are growing, and as for professionalism, I’ve heard some community radio presenters who are far better than some of the “professional” announcers.

There are also a large number of “professional” announcers who started their careers in community radio.

I manage a community radio station in Bathurst, and I can produce figures that show that we out rate our local commercial FM station! Is it true? Probably not, but it does prove that figures can lie, and liers can figure! Like always the truth is some where in the middle.

This … is typical of how naive the commercial radio sector in this country is, claiming that none of the missing ten percent listen to community radio shows his lack of understanding not of the Sydney market, but the industry as a whole. (sorry, couldn’t resist the re-write.)
