Double J gets inside the Big Day Out

Big Day Out was the world’s biggest touring music festival and for music fans, it was an Australian rite of passage, every band on the planet wanted to be on the line-up, and the backstage parties were legendary.

But what made it so successful and why did it collapse?

Throughout October, Double J will look back at an iconic era in Australian music history, with live music galore and a five-part podcast series diving deep Inside The Big Day Out.

The podcast tells the story of the pioneering music festival as told by the people behind it, the musicians who played it and the punters who went year after year.

There are incredible contributions from members of Beasts of Bourbon, Cosmic Psychos, Eskimo Joe, Frenzal Rhomb, Grinspoon, Jebediah, Magic Dirt, Powderfinger, Shihad, The Clouds, The Living End, Tiddas, You Am I and Violent Femmes.

Plus of course Big Day Out’s own Ken West, Vivien Lees, Sahara Herald, Adam Zammit and AJ Maddah.

Hear from triple j alumni Jen Oldershaw who attended the very first Big Day Out, and Jessica Michalik’s best friend, who was with Jessica at the festival when she tragically passed away.

Hosted by Gemma Pike, Inside The Big Day Out is available as a five-part podcast with Episode 1 now up, and  new episodes going live every Tuesday from 8 October.

Double J have also gone back through the archives to find triple j’s backstage recordings from the Big Day Out and will broadcast them from Midday every day in October.

They have also added Live at the Wireless double headers at 7pm Tuesdays in October including sets from the likes of Grinspoon, Fatboy Slim, Magic Dirt, M.I.A., Red Hot Chili Peppers, and System of A Down.

Plus Caz Tran will play a Classic Album from an iconic Big Day Out artist at 7pm Mondays in October, including Hole, Lily Allen, Prodigy and Shihad
