David Oldfield stood down over asylum seeker comments

2UE has suspended fill in announcer David Oldfield for racist comments about asylum seekers.

The former One Nation politician, who had been filling in on drive for just three shifts before the comments were made, told his listeners:

“We’ll turn on the electric fences and the ones who are here we will make sure they don’t escape and they will be fried. . .

“Forget about the idea they are fleeing death… its common practice to pay a bribe to leave Afghanistan… get a plane, then do a bit of duty free shopping on the way… go to Indonesia and get a boat to Australia.

“A true refugee flees to the point of safety… they are country shoppers…

“If you don’t like terms like fried you can ring up and complain…”

So they did.

An elderly woman rang to complain about his asylum seeker description and management got involved.

In a brief apology made before he was suspended yesterday, Oldfield said:

“Some of my words and delivery were inappropriate. As a result of my poorly considered comments, 2UE has suspended me. I hope to join you at some stage in the future.”

2UE PD Greg Byrnes has left open the possibility of Oldfield returning to 2UE after his suspension. “What he said was inappropriate and unacceptable but we have also had an immense response to him on air. He has a future if he can learn to have better judgment, [which is] essential for live radio.”
