Cyclone Veronica knocks out community radio transmitters

Tropical cyclone Veronica knocked out two of Ngaarda Media’s transmitters in north west WA as it ripped through the north of Australia this week.

The cyclone was unusually large and slow moving, taking many hours to cross the Pilbara coast, with Veronica’s destructive winds lasting much longer than a normal cyclone and bringing a year’s rainfall to the area in just one day.

The cyclone knocked out the station’s Roebourne and Karrath transmitters, but the station’s online service and other transmitters are still broadcasting.

Ngaarda Media offers a platform for Indigenous and Non-indigenous people across the Pilbara to tell their stories through radio, photography and videography.

The station is dedicated to nurturing and keeping culture strong. Ngaarda Media presents Aboriginal culture in an inspiring and meaningful way, across all digital media, to allow more people to experience the oldest living culture on earth.

Ngaarda Media has a license to broadcast across the Pilbara and is the only Aboriginal media and broadcasting hub in the area.

Manager Tangiora Hinaki and her team posted stunning pictures of the cyclone as it came through the region on the station’s facebook page.
