Caralis joins ratings’ war

The owner of Sydney’s struggling 2SM, Bill Caralis, is reportedly planning legal action against Nielsen Media Research over ‘wrongful publication’ of its rating figures in the first survey of 2004.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald’s Sue Javes, Caralis has been in touch with Noel Crowe, head of Sport 927 in Melbourne, who recently scored a Federal Court victory, forcing Nielsen to “undertake certain steps, as demanded by Sport 927”.

Nielsen was required not to publish audience share figures for Sport 927, and to issue a public statement about the methodology used in Survey 1 with the Tuesday’s Survey 2 ratings’ results.

The changes have been made after consultation, and in agreement with, Commercial Radio Australia.

Sport 927 will follow up that statement with publicity of its own about the last result and will go back to the Federal Court on 21 April to pursue a claim for damages.
