Winners have been announced for the State and Territory Australian Of The Year Awards.

It is from these that the Australian Of The Year will be chosen and announced for Australian Day 2004.

Steve Waugh (NSW) – for his contribution to sport, humanitarian causes and charity.

Steve IRWIN (Qld) – for his contribution to the environment, education, community service and humanitarian causes. .

Dr Fiona WOOD (WA) – for her contribution to medicine, science, and humanitarian causes. .

Bernadette McMENAMIN (Vic) – for her contribution to humanitarian causes. .

(Ms) Mem FOX (SA) – for her contribution to literacy. .

Michael KENT (Tas) – for his contribution to business, charity, community service and sport. .

Prof Judith WHITMORE (ACT) – for her contribution to business, medicine, science, and women’s affairs. .

The NT Winner will be announced this coming Saturday evening. .

The winners have been chosen from names submitted by the general public. .

The Australian of the Year – together with the winners in the other categories of Young Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, and Local Hero – will be announced during a national television special on the evening of January 25th, 2004.
