An all-star Radio Play: ‘The Ballad of The Mudgee Budgie’

In a return to the days of heroes and villains and good vs evil, ABC Radio Melbourne’s The Friday Revue with Richelle Hunt and Brian Nankervis has a new radio play for 2017.

In the grand tradition of classic radio serials, ‘The Ballad of The Mudgee Budgie’ thrusts you deep into the sweaty, intoxicating world of women’s football, reality television and rock and roll.

Over four episodes, running from next Friday until its conclusion on the eve of the AFL Women’s League Grand Final on 24th March, The ‘Ballad of the Mudgee Budgie’ offers an hilarious escape from reality. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll revel in a parallel universe where dreams just may come true.

The saga begins with the CEO of the AFL Ms Gillian McLaughlin and American media mogul Donald Chump announcing a new television reality show ‘Let The Stadium Sing’ to find an anthem for the AFL Women’s League. The winning song will be performed at the 2017 AFLW Grand Final. Mudgee cumquat farmer, single mother and part time Flying Doctor pilot Merridy Berry is persuaded by her teenage daughter to enter the competition, along with singers David Hobson, Clare Bowditch and try-hard wannabee Bastian. ‘Let The Stadium Sing’ is hosted by the effervescent Jamie Happyclap and judged by Saskia Shines and Beaut Neutron.

Will Merridy survive the cut throat competition and save the family farm? How low will Ronald Chump and his henchmen Marty and Gary Goon stoop in their pursuit of power? Who are Ronnie Dale and Doctor Jock McLochness and what is the significance of Merridy’s stump jump plough? Find out as ‘The Ballad Of The Mudgee Budgie’ unfolds over four wonderful episodes.

Written by Ezra Bix and Brian Nankervis, ‘The Ballad of the Mudgee Budgie’ stars Geneveive Morris, Colin Lane, Carole Patullo, Russell Fletcher, Brian and Ezra, with cameos by Richelle Hunt, Bert Newton, Marcia Hines, David Hobson, and Clare Bowditch!

The Friday Revue, beginning on March 3 at 2.05 pm.
