AFTRS congratulates ACRA Award winning Radio Graduates

AFTRS Radio graduates have won 8 major awards at the ACRAs, held last weekend on the Gold Coast. A total of 30 AFTRS graduates were nominated as finalists this year.

Former students of the full time commercial radio course who won awards are:

BEST NEWCOMER ON AIR (Metro):

Kate McLoughlin – 104.7 Triple M, Austereo Network, Adelaide SA (now at 2DAY FM)

BEST MUSIC DIRECTOR (Country):

Drew Michel – Kiss 95.3, Mid-West Radio, Lithgow NSW

BEST MUSIC DIRECTOR (Provincial):

Dan Veling – 95.5 K-Rock, Grant Broadcasters, Geelong VIC

BEST ON AIR TEAM (Country):

Loretta Smit – 93.5 Star FM Dubbo, Macquarie Regional Radioworks, Dubbo NSW

BEST NEWS PRESENTER (FM Metro):

Kristy Warner – Mix 106.5 / WS FM 101.7, Australian Radio Network, Sydney NSW

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN PRODUCTION (Metro):

Simon Kennedy – Nova 969, DMG Radio, Sydney NSW

Two other winners are graduates of the AFTRS Graduate Certificate in Commercial Radio Programming.

BEST PROMOTIONS DIRECTOR (Non-Metro):

Kristie Pain – 92.5 GOLD FM, Macquarie Regional Radioworks, Gold Coast QLD

BEST PROGRAM DIRECTOR (Provincial):

Coast QLD Mitch Braund – Sea FM 100.9, Macquarie Regional Radioworks, Hobart TAS

Head of Radio Steve Ahern congratulated the winners: “When people get into our AFTRS courses we know they have a passion for the radio industry and a drive to succeed, so it is not surprising their work should be recognized in these prestigious awards.

“I wish all past students who got into the finalist rounds my heartiest congratulations and know they will continue build their careers on the good grounding they got from AFTRS.”

AFTRS Radio Branch offers a range of

· full time courses,

· flexible and distance education courses for industry professionals,

· and short courses which are taught all around the country.

They include: Program Directing, Music Directing, Copywriting, News, Voiceover, Production, Research and the 8 month Graduate Diploma in Commercial Radio Broadcasting.

Applications are open now for next year’s Radio Program Directors Course and a part time Graduate Diploma in Radio Broadcasting is also being developed for 2005.
