ABC Voter Score Card campaign rolls out as voters consider their election choices

The community and public sector union (CPSU) has begun a campaign urging voters to consider party positions on the national broadcaster in their electoral choice on May 18.

The campaign includes a voter score card and flyer that assesses the major parties on their support for the ABC.

The scorecard is being advertised on Facebook with graphics and a video that list the economic and social benefits delivered by the ABC.

The campaign will especially target the marginal seats of:

  • Leichhardt, Herbert and Griffiths QLD
  • Paige, Gilmore, Banks, Reid and Wentworth NSW
  • Boothby SA
  • Flinders and Corangamite VIC
  • Cowan, Pearce, Perth & Fremantle WA
  •

    The union flyer says:

“The future of our ABC is under threat because certain politicians and commercial media outlets with vested interests want to sell it off and shut it down.

“These people are not working for our best interests and this election we have the opportunity to stop them.”

“80% of Australian trust and rely on the ABC,” says the flyer, quoting statistics showing 17 million people watch or listen to the national broadcaster every week and 30 million podcasts are downloaded every month. There is also a campaign website.

The score card flyer gives a thumbs up or down to the political parties that support the ABC and says the ABC “won’t survive” another term of a Coalition government.

The campaign, which has just launched, has already received hundreds of supportive likes and shares, but, as with any social media campaign, once it is out there, it is also open to negative as well as supportive comments, which can be viewed in the various posts on the facebook page.
