ABC Radio wins Human Rights media awards

This year’s Human Rights Awards were announced this week. The Awards attracted 157 nominations.

Whilst asylum seeker and refugee issues were significant for media, the professionals who were nominated as independent judges in each category were uniformly impressed with the sheer diversity, quality and range of work submitted in all categories.

The ABC’s Robyn Ravlich and Russell Stapleton won the Radio award for a documentary on three generations of asylum seekers. Triple J producer Cath Dwyer won two high commendations.

An ABC Four Corners report by Andrew Fowler on the NSW mental health system won the TV Award. Ruth Balint and Jo-Anne McGowan’s Troubled Waters and SBS TV’s Anne Delaney and Daniela Torsch’s Seeking Refuge were highly commended.

The winner of the prestigious Human Rights Medal was Michael Raper, for his passionate and tireless work on behalf of low income and disadvantaged Australians. He is the director of the Welfare Rights Centre, Sydney.
