ABC Radio gets first look at Logitek Mosaic

The ABC has just taken delivery of the first Logitek Mosaic consoles in the world, a “refreshed” version of the popular Numix desk.

Mosaic was officially launched at NAB 2005 in Las Vegas this week, but ABC Radio was the first customer in the world to get a hands-on look at the updated version of the Numix surface during Factory Acceptance Testing in Feburary.

The ABC ordered three of the desks, which are part of Logitek systems for their rebuilds of regional stations in Renmark, Port Lincoln and Mt Isa. Each site will use the Mosaic for the main studio, with Logitek’s Remora surface in their secondary and news studios.

The Mosaic surface is a totally new look for Logitek, but retains many of the familiar features, including their famous high-resolution LED meters.

Mosaic is a modular design – scalable from as few as 4 faders through to 24. Additional modules add user definable buttons for console scene recall, as well as routing, delay control, intercom, monitoring control and other functions.

The flash new look includes ON and OFF buttons that can change colour in response to certain events, while other buttons now have variable brightness to give further user feedback in different situations.

It all connects to a Logitek Audio Engine, which provides audio mixing and routing for the entire facility. The ABC installations will use two Audio Engines, with a fibre network linking them for audio sharing between studios.

The ABC will also use Logitek’s SharcAttack DSP cards, which provide EQ and dynamics, as well as in built profanity display. The delay function is superior to using external delay units – not only is it significantly cheaper to do it inside the Logitek Engine, but you also get an accurate delay time display as you are “filling”. To suit ABC specific requirements, the SharcAttack delay now includes “gap expansion” to allow a rapid delay entry during talk programming.

The ABC’s first Logitek installation was for the new Ballarat station in 2003. Renmark, Port Lincoln and Mt Isa will be commissioned by mid-year.
