ABC Giving Tree Appeal raises over $70,000 for Tasmanians in need

Thirty young elves, recruited by ABC Radio Hobart, helped Tasmanian charities load up thousands of gifts for the state’s needy in the 2016 ABC Giving Tree appeal.

The island state may be Australia’s poorest, but the ABC has again tapped a huge steam of generosity in the community with this year’s festive fundraising effort.

In addition to truckloads of gifts, more than $70,000 cash was donated online and at special community events hosted statewide by ABC personalities and staff.

These ranged from quiz nights and choir performances to yoga and market stalls. This year, Tasmania’s libraries were also designated collection points for gifts for the ABC appeal.

Local Radio Manager Joce Nettlefold said, “The Giving Tree donations make a real difference to those experiencing hardship and anxiety in our community. The ABC team’s goodwill and generosity generates a lot of support, enabling nine Tasmanian charities to distribute the gifts and money this Christmas.”
