After twenty years in St Kilda, Austereo has made the move to the new Clarendon Street premises in South Melbourne, which they say houses the most advanced digital studios in Australia. The 16-studio complex is fully digital with the central Digital Network being provided by Klotz Digital in Germany. See all the pics below...

Anna Drummond, the Senior Designer at Architect Firm Woods Bagot said “The inspiration for Fox FM and Triple M’s interior design within the new Austereo premises, was the contrasting themes of ‘Glamour’ and ‘Grit’, and their co-existence without dilution of the stations’ iconic brand identities.

“The design evokes the discovery of a glamorous venue, tucked away above a grimy laneway. This sense of irony illustrates the inexplicable cultural linkage between Melbourne’s ‘glamorous’ face and ‘gritty’ underbelly.”

Woods Bagot designed the space to allow for staff individuality and creativity, “In a workplace that must embody the constant flux of Melbourne trends, staff are encouraged to continue to ‘design’ their environment by utilising flexible display systems, graffiti walls and workspaces conducive to creative collaboration – all set to music. The effect is unashamedly theatrical and surreal,” Drummond explains.

In addition to providing a new home for Fox FM and Triple M Melbourne, the complex forms the hub for Austereo’s National digital radio operations with two on-air studios and a production studio dedicated to digital radio content creation. These are the very first studios to be built exclusively for digital radio.

It was also vital to ensure the new studios would accommodate and benefit the people who actually use them day-to-day. Matt Tilley, co-host of Fox FM’s breakfast show has been enjoying the change of the new South Melbourne studios, “it’s very exciting. My arm isn't anywhere near as sore now we don't have to pass the one microphone between us anymore. My only previous experience of anything digital was in customs once, so this is a lovely change.”

All studios are linked to other Austereo studios around Australia allowing easy sharing and exchanging of programming content. The facility is based largely on German and American Technologies. The facility makes extensive use of Fibre optic technology to transfer the numerous broadcast signals around the complex.

The centre is also the Hub for a number of Austereo Enterprise services including the National Virtual Private Network and M net.
