SWR Triple 9 and AFL Indigenous Broadcasting join forces

For the first time, AFL will be broadcast every Friday night on FM radio in Sydney.

SWR Triple 9 expands into the sports broadcasting realm by teaming up with the National Indigenous Radio Service’s ‘AFL Indigenous Broadcasting’.

The AFL Indigenous Broadcasting crew have been covering AFL Football for over 20 years, and includes media identities Chris Johnson, Peter “Crackers” Keenan, Barry Denner, Graham “Smokey” Dawson and this year’s coverage will also feature input from Swans Legends Michael O’Loughlin and Adam Goodes.

SWR Triple 9, through their sporting arm SWR Sport, have entered into a partnership with AFL Indigenous Broadcasting to bring radio listeners in Sydney’s west live AFL football for the 2018 AFL season, with every Friday night match to be broadcast live on 99.9FM.

In addition, members of the SWR team will join the AFL Indigenous Broadcasting crew to call every GWS Giants and Sydney Swans home game, plus selected away games throughout the season.

The SWR AFL team will be led by Julian Daw who will be joined on AFL programming in 2018 by Murray Conallin, Phil Prior and Will Gotsis through both live calls and a specialist AFL radio program every Wednesday night ‘SWRFooty’ which will feature the latest AFL news in the Giants and Swans camps as well as a full wrap of the latest NEAFL and AFL Sydney action.

This follows on from SWR Triple 9’s summer of sport which has included live A-League broadcasts in partnership with Crocmedia, Sydney Kings and Illawarra Hawks NBL, the Sydney World Rugby 7’s, Sydney Tennis International, the English Super League tour of Australia and the Socceroos 2nd leg World Cup qualifying clash with Honduras in which the station became the first of its kind to broadcast its own call of a pivotal World Cup qualifying match.

Head of SWR Sport Julian Daw said “It’s a massive honour to be serving effectively as the Sydney arm of what is such a vital prong of the AFL radio machine. It’s a privilege but also a big responsibility, one we don’t take lightly and one we will relish.

“For listeners in Western Sydney there is more choice now than ever for live AFL radio and the names involved with the NIRS broadcast are a who’s who of top tier broadcasters, we can’t wait to have them as part of the extended SWR family/”

AFL Indigenous Broadcasting is available to every community station across Australia regionally and in all capital cities, with all games streamed live online and on mobile devices via afl.com.au.
