Stitcher unstitched – one less app player in the podcast market

SiriusXM Satellite Radio, the massive US subscription audio service has quietly shut down the Stitcher app in both a revamp of its podcast service and to encourage more people towards its new app (branded SXM).

SiriusXM, and the app are not yet available in Australia.

I went to my Buzzsprout account this morning and the Stitcher app had already been removed.

In October 2022 SCA entered into an agreement with AdsWizz to exclusively represent the ad inventory of select Stitcher and SiriusXM podcasts in Australia through the LiSTNR app and other podcast listening platforms. I would imagine this agreement will be transferred to SXM.

The app will shut down on August 29. A farewell FAQs page says that subscribers to Stitcher’s original podcast offerings like The Sporkful and LeVar Burton Reads will still be able to access them through SiriusXM, saying “all podcasts on Stitcher can also be found anywhere else podcasts are distributed.”

SiriusXM’s app is promising an all-new listening experience later this year.

In the early days of podcasts, we were offered the Pandora app on our selected platform, but trying to get listed required a US address. It will be interesting to see whether SXM pops up in our directories in the coming months, and whether we’ll be able to access it.
