Australia vaults past U.S. smart speaker adoption - Voicebot.ai report

Voicebot.ai has released its Australia Smart Speaker Consumer Adoption Report 2019 that now places the country ahead of the U.S. in user base, relative to population, despite having the devices available for less than half the time.

 
The report also highlights that 2 in 3 smart speaker owners now use their purchases to listen to radio.

A few years ago I started tracking the divergence of media consumption devices, as some got bigger and some got smaller.
 
There was a trend towards big home theatre screens and surround sound speaker configurations, but, at the same time, there was a demand for more personal consumption technology as well.
 
This was a slide that I was using from about 2013 to explain the divergence.

He is now the Executive Chairman of News Corp and was previously the CEO of APN, which owns the Australlian Radio Network.

Miller is concerned by a new trend he sees happening in the emerging audio space.

Google is urging radio stations to format and bookmark their audio news content in a way that will enable the world wide search engine giant to slice and dice content to deliver it to its consumers in a way that suits their preferences.

The Australian radio industry’s RadioApp has been updated to support Apple’s new Siri Shortcuts feature, meaning listeners can now ask the virtual assistant to play any of the 280 Australian radio stations on the app straight from the lock screen.

The update of the radio streaming app coincides with the release of Apple’s new iOS 12 operating system and three new iPhones, the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR.

43 million Americans own a smart speaker

18% of Americans own a Smart Speaker, around 43 million people, and usage is growing.

According to the Smart Audio report, conducted by NPR and Edison Research, smart speaker reach into households has past the early adopter stage and is growing fast.
