Reporting Disasters and Wars – Sydney course this weekend

The Australian Film Television and Radio School is offering a new course for aspiring foreign correspondents and roving reporters. If you still want to get in there are a few places left – ring 02 9805 6586 urgently.

Do you understand bullet trajectories and the distances weapons can fire at?

Would you be able to plan a safe route in and out of a natural disaster zone?

Do you know how weather could impact on a biological attack?

You might need to if you want to be a foreign correspondent or reporter in a war zone.

This course is for working broadcast journalists, reporters and aspiring foreign correspondents looking to acquire the skills to report live and file stories from danger zones and disaster areas safely and accurately.

It will cover assessing risk, planning and preparing for reporting assignments in dangerous and challenging environments.

Participants will be given an understanding of medical, chemical and biological risks plus weapons and ballistics awareness. Reporting in high tension situations and in co-operation with emergency services personnel will also be covered.

AFTRS Head of Radio Steve Ahern has told radioinfo it’s not a cheap course but it’s worth it: “It will be of interest to radio and television reporters, camera teams and others who are already reporting in such situations or are preparing themselves for their next career move.”

The course is being held on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 February. Applications close soon.
