It isn’t business as usual on ABC Radio: Judith Whelan

Judith Whelan has replaced Michael Mason as Director of ABC Regional & Local.
In this role she runs most, but not all, of the ABC’s radio services.
radioinfo’s Steve Ahern sat down with Whelan to discuss her priorities and find out more about her transition from print to broadcast.

Judith Whelan has been confirmed as Director of ABC Regional & Local, replacing Michael Mason.

She has been acting in the role since Mason retired last November.

ABC Managing Director David Anderson says Whelan’s considerable experience in senior media roles at the Sydney Morning Herald and more recently managing television, radio and digital content at the ABC, has made her the perfect choice for the role.

The ABC’s Director of Regional & Local, Michael Mason, farewells the corporation after 34 years.  
Today is his last day.
During his career, Michael worked in Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide and managed the ABC’s Local Radio and Regional networks as well as ABC RN, before becoming Director of Radio in 2014 and then Director of R&L at the beginning of this year following the corporation’s internal restructure.

ABC's Director of Regional & Local, Michael Mason, has announced he will leave the national broadcaster at the end of the year.

He emailed staff in the Regional and Local Division (previously called Radio Division) today with the following message:


My departure from the ABC
I am writing to let you know that very shortly the acting Managing Director, David Anderson, will make an announcement regarding my decision to leave the ABC at the end of the year.

As a result of new proposals outlined today by ABC Managing Director Michelle Guthrie, there will no longer be a Radio Division within the ABC.

In future, program makers will be organised around content rather than transmission output.

ABC announces 19 live streaming regional stations

The stations will be streamed live via mobile and online by March 2018.
