Will Nine end up owning all of Macquarie Media?

The merger of Nine and Fairfax is due to complete this Friday.

Along with the merger of both companies, Nine will also end up owning Fairfax Media's 54% share of Macquarie Media.

But would Nine like to own it all? Perhaps so.

Nine has responded to media speculation today with a short media statement saying the company has "had discussions" about the remaining 46% of shares in Macquarie Media, most of which are owned by John Singleton.

With today's proposed merger announcement of Fairfax and Nine, what is the status of Macquarie Media?

The answer is "business as usual" according to CEO Adam Lang.

Lang has told radioinfo:

If the Scheme proceeds as recommended, our major shareholder will change from Fairfax Media to Nine.

For everyone at Macquarie Media, this means business as usual.

The proposed merger between the Fairfax and Macquarie radio networks has now been put on hold until at least March while the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission examines the deal to make sure that neither listeners nor advertisers are harmed in the process.

Everything old is new again!

Radio Green Room moderator Jose Auditore found a blast from the past in his archives, which reminded him of the current merger of Fairfax Media and Macquarie Radio Network's 2GB.

In 1979, Fairfax had taken over 2GB and appointed Max Suich (pictured) to "steer 2GB out of it's rating's mire."

A loyal listener rang Jason Morrison’s Drive program on 2UE on Monday. ‘Mate is it true, what I read in the Tele over the weekend? You’re not leaving are you?’

Another caller professed undying loyalty as he explained how he’d followed Morrison from his early days at 2SM through to 2GB and then moved with him to 2UE. He vowed to switch stations again just to listen him.
