Commercial radio revenue is down by over $5 million

Commercial radio metropolitan advertising revenue declined by 2.6% to $181.612 million in the March quarter compared to $186.518 million in the same period a year ago, according to data compiled by Deloitte and released today by Commercial Radio Australia.
 
Ad revenues fell slightly across all five major capital city markets in the quarter, in line with softening economic conditions.
 

SCA’s Agency Sales To Represent 2CH

Southern Cross Austereo have been appointed agency sales representative for 2CH (including DAB+) from April 12, taking over from Macquarie Media.

The addition of 2CH to the SCA stable will increase the ability to deliver to a wider audience across the 25 – 50+ age demographic, which will enable engagement with new listeners and advertisers.

John Singleton has told The Australian that selling his shares in Macquarie Media is inevitable.
 
According to The Australian, any offer from the Nine Network will be delayed until and if Alan Jones signs a new contract to take him past June 30.
 

Nine Entertainment reports $1.2 billion revenue in first half

For the first time, radioinfo is covering the results of a tv company.

But Nine Entertainment Co is no longer just a tv station. With the Fairfax merger Nine now owns newspapers, digital assets and the largest share of Macquarie Media.

The company delivered its first half year report today, for the six months to December 2018.

On a Statutory basis, Nine reported a Net Profit After Tax of $172m, down 1% on the previous corresponding period.

Macquarie Media has released its half year company results for 2019, with Underlying Net Profit (NPAT) down 6% on last yea

 

Statutory EBITDA, an ‘apples with apples’ comparison requirement from the stock exchange, was down 45% ($6 million), but this includes a range of one-off significant items such as impairment, legal claims and property.

Legal claims, such as the Wagner family defamation payment are expected to impact on the company’s bottom line by over $4 million.

 

Will Nine end up owning all of Macquarie Media?

The merger of Nine and Fairfax is due to complete this Friday.

Along with the merger of both companies, Nine will also end up owning Fairfax Media's 54% share of Macquarie Media.

But would Nine like to own it all? Perhaps so.

Nine has responded to media speculation today with a short media statement saying the company has "had discussions" about the remaining 46% of shares in Macquarie Media, most of which are owned by John Singleton.

Macquarie Media launches its first national program

Macquarie Media has launched its first national program, Macquarie Weekly, hosted by Justin Smith.
 
With a focus on news and current affairs, the program is live each Sunday on 2GB, 3AW, 4BC and 6PR and will look at the news of the week through the eyes and ears of the presenters, journalists and listeners of Macquarie Radio.

Longtime 2GB Major shareholder John Singleton has, for an equally long time, lamented that his number one station was not given the share of advertising it deserved because ad buying agencies were populated with young people who preferred FM.
 
AM Radio may not be cutting edge technology but MacRadio’s online presence certainly is - as is its production values.  All that was showcased at MacRadio’s Big Six initiative, launched to a large gathering of agency types at The Star yesterday afternoon.
