'Disappointing' news for two community stations that will go dark

Two community radio operations today have joined a small group of stations to have lost their licences in Australia.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority had cancelled the licences of only six other stations in the past, with Hawkesbury Radio 2VTR and Rhema Radio 4MIG Mt Isa now added to the list.

Two community stations not renewed in ACMA re-licencing process

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has renewed 148 of 150 community broadcasting licences assessed in the last financial year.

Two of 150 renewal applications received in the last financial year were declined by the ACMA:

  • 2VTR in the Windsor area of New South Wales; and
  • 4MIG in Mount Isa, Queensland

The two stations have been contacted for comment. The Mt Isa station's contact number appears to be disconnected and the station website is no longer operating.

ACMA finds 2VTR not doing enough to encourage community participation

2VTR, communtiy radio station in Windsor, NSW has been issued remedial directions from the Australian Communications and Media Authority after it was found to be in breach of a licence condition requiring it to encourage community participation in the operations of the station.

This licence condition is a key point of difference between community broadcasting services and other categories of broadcasting service.

A few weeks ago, Friday June 27 to be exact, a Supreme Court Justice found that John Bryant who was expelled as a member of Hawkesbury Radio 89.9 FM last year was denied procedural fairness by station management and declared the expulsion as being ‘void and of no effect.’ Read more here.
So far Mr Bryant has not been reinstated.

Less than two weeks ago, Hawkesbury Radio 89.9 FM, a community station on the outskirts of Sydney, lost a case in the NSW Supreme Court brought by former member John Bryant. The station has been ordered to reinstate Bryant who was found to have been denied procedural fairness when he was expelled over a year ago.
