'They're cutting all the good things the ABC does'

Members of three groups have gathered at the ABC's Sydney headquarters today to protest cuts and an impending restructure being  considered by the board (see our earlier report).

The ABC Board is coming under intense pressure from ABC supporters not to cut crucial ABC programs.

ABC Friends and supporters have rallied outside the ABC Board meeting, protesting the potential axing of Lateline and Friday night's state-based 7.30 as well as possible cuts to ABC Radio.

ABC on-air and production staff have signed an open letter to the ABC board calling for greater transparency and engagement with staff in the wake of news that ABC funding could be cut by more than $100 million in the next year.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull would not confirm the exact figure that the Lewis Review into ABC and SBS efficiency had put forward but indicated it would be 'substantial.'

“The Government’s announced efficiency review of the ABC is an outrageous and dangerous interference in the ABC’s independence", said Glenys Stradijot, a spokesperson for ABC Friends.
 
The national conference held in Melbourne last week focused heavily on devising strategies to defend the public broadcaster after what the organisation sees as “the Government’s attacks on ABC News, the announcement of an ABC efficiency review, and doubt cast on Australia Network’s future.”
