The expansion of digital radio to regional areas in Australia’s vast continent is an issue that has been challenging broadcasters and regulators for some time.

While DAB+ has been highly successful in Australia’s main population centres, its expansion to the rest of the country has slowed due to cost, technology and frequency issues.

Some of the submissions to the recent ACMA consultation on the Future of Radio revived discussion on the possibility of using DRM to solve some digital radio coverage issues in regional Australia.

The Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium has been busy at Amsterdam's IBC, co-ordinating a raft of announcements about the latest  broadcasting technology.

Solomon Islands Broadcasting win first DRM award

The Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium have announced the recipient of the first DRM Enterprise Award is the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation for showing interest in actively introducing DRM.

The award aims to stimulate interest in the DRM standard in various parts of the world that would benefit from the full introduction of digital radio.

Mr Sharad Sadhu co-ordinated the event on behalf of the DRM Consortium and was very pleased to see the first DRM Enterprise Award go to the SIBC and said:
