Financial analyst off track with his predictions about radio industry disruption

Citi analyst David Kaynes appears to have lost his way in an analysis of the radio industry's next challenge - digital disruption in cars.

Perhaps he is using an old street directory, instead of a mapping app, because his analysis seems way out of date and fails to take into account many of the things the radio industry has already done to prepare for digital disruption in cars.

As the trial of digital radio services in Canberra and Darwin is set to be made permanent, The Australian Communications and Media Authority has also completed regulatory arrangements for digital radio to be made available in Hobart.

Car manufacturers are very savvy about what they feature in their advertisements.

Body shape, drivability, seat comfort and features are carefully scrutinised and the elements most calculated to appeal to buyers are finally chosen to be featured in car ads.

At the moment Mitsubishi's prime time tv ads are highlighting digital radio as one of the most important dashboard entertainment options.

Presumably their dealers and marketing information is telling them that purchasers are asking for digital radios in their new cars, and the company is responding.

FBi Click to be replaced by 94.5 on DAB+

Due to the growth of digital radio listening, Sydney community station FBi is dropping its Click format from the DAB+ band and will now simulcast its main service on both FM and DAB.

The station, targeted at youth, has noticed significant growth in DAB+ listening. By late 2016, almost 23% of 10-17 year olds and 17.5% of 18-24 year olds were listening to the new digital band.

Communications Minister Fifield announces extra digital radio funding for community sector on Light FM

"It's important that the community radio sector has certainty," said Communications Minister Mitch Fifield, announcing additional funding for community digital radio on Light FM Melbourne this morning.

"We recognise it is important that we make funding provision to ensure that this important work that community radio does can be supported and that the transition to digital radio can be supported," he told Light FM presenters Lucy and Kel.
