The Talent Coach: Craig Bruce

There are many factors that have made the Kyle and Jackie O show one of the best radio shows in the world.

I wanted to focus on just one of those factors which has been critical to their success.

I was the content director at 2DayFM in 2005 when the show first started in breakfast and it was my first time working closely with the guys.

The thing I remember most about the weekly planning sessions was this one question that Jackie would ask at the start of every meeting.

The Talent Coach: Craig Bruce

Breakfast shows are like baby animals in the wild, they have a fair chance of survival as long they don’t get mauled in their first 6 months of life.

So what should you be thinking about if you’re just about to take your first tentative steps into the tough and uncompromising world of breakfast radio? And what are the coaching opportunities for content directors with new shows?

I’ve been working with a couple of new shows this year both here and overseas and the feedback has been fairly consistent for each team:

Those who didn’t make it

Craig Bruce Talent Coach

Being a radio content director is not easy and it’s not for everyone.

It requires a combination of really specific skills and whilst there’s a lot that’s been said and written about the CDs who have been successful, very little is spoken of the ones who didn’t make it.

This has been difficult for me to write because every time I placed a new CD into a radio station I was always full of hope that he or she would be successful. Unfortunately there were many CDs during my time who despite their best efforts couldn’t do the job.

Fast thinker, brilliant story teller - Mick Molloy. Game Changers: Radio

It began with The D-Generation in 1990. About the same time, he teamed up with Tony Martin for a show called Bulltwang which was the forerunner to the hugely successful Martin Molloy National Drive show. that went from 1995 - 1998.

Then in 2004, it was Tough Love with Mick Molloy.

Behind every radio show is a great producer.

They are the unsung heroes of many a high profile Breakfast and Drive team on major metro stations.

Radio networks have always been known to spend considerable resources on trying to uncover the next breakthrough in on a air talent. But according to Game Changers: Radio presenter Craig Bruce, the hidden battle, that is just as intense, is to find the next brilliant producer.

What is chemistry?

Friday 29 April, 2016

In our industry it’s the $64 question and depending on the market size, I may have missed a couple of zeros in that equation.

In Episode 1 of Game Changers: Radio I spoke to Marty Sheargold about chemistry. Now, before you read his response, just a reminder that this bloke knows a thing or two about developing chemistry with his on-air partners.
