Audience measurement: Diaries and PPMs

As radioinfo continues to examine ratings, we compare the new smart diary system now adopted in Australia with the PPM system used in the US.
Two years ago Australian advertising agencies were crying out for change in the way the radio industry measured its audience. Electronic tv ratings were available, but, back then, radio was still using only paper diaries.

Commercial Radio Australia is concerned about the High Court ruling against the unanimous decision of the Federal Court in the 2Day FM case. The industry body says the decision has ramifications for the entire broadcast industry.

The High Court decision means that the ACMA "can express an opinion that a radio or television broadcaster is guilty or innocent of an offence before any investigation, possible charges and/or legal proceedings or outcome have occurred," according to CRA.

Radio Industry host drinks at Parliament House

Neil Mitchell and Malcolm Turnbull spoke at a Commercial Radio Australia organised radio industry drinks at Parliament House last week.

The CRA Board, plus commercial radio CEOs and owners (metropolitan and regional) invited Government, Opposition and Independent MPs and Senators to Parliament House for the event that is held every few years.

No conflict between IAB and CRA on measurement

CRA's Joan Warner has told radioinfo that comments attributed to her in a Mumbrella article today were taken out of context.

Reporting a new initiative by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) to form a Digital Audio Council for measuring streaming music services such as Pandora, Rdio, Spotify, iHeartRadio and others, Mumbrella referenced comments by Warner, giving the impression there was a current conflict between CRA and IAB.

More Aussies listening to commercial radio

More Australians tuned into commercial radio in 2014 than ever before, with an average cumulative audience of 10.1 million people listening each week in metropolitan areas throughout 2014, an increase of 4.13% from 2013.   
The listening data is from CRA’s commercial radio listening summary, an analysis of the GfK eight ratings surveys in the five capital city markets in 2014, compared with the previous year. 

Don Dawkins recognised for 25 years in commercial radio

Don Dawkins has been recognised by CRA as having working in commercial radio for 25 years, joining the prestigious quarter century club.

The recognition comes 15 years overdue however, as Don has been an active member of commercial radio for 40 years.

ACRAs 2015 destination announced

The Gold Coast has once again been been given the nod as the city to host the ACRAs and National Radio Conference starting October 9, 2015.

The Gold Coast hosted the annual events in 2011 with Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne doingb the honours in 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively.
