Axe falls next Monday for ABC staff

ABC staff will find out next Monday where the axe will fall, as the national broadcaster takes action to deal with the budget cut announced by Communications MInister Malcolm Turnbull this week.

ABC Managing Director Mark Scott told a Senate Estimates Committee yesterday that details of cuts "need to be finalised and we need to brief staff first."

Lewis Review Efficiency Study released as budget cuts announced

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has released the executive summary of The Lewis Efficiency Review, as the same time as announcing a 5% cut to the national broadcasters ABC and SBS.

The review says there is an ongoing imperative on the broadcasters, as with all government agencies and authorities, "to use these resources as efficiently as possible with the flexibility to respond to audience demands and technology changes."

Phone a Coalition politician, happening today in response to ABC cuts

Around Australia today, people who appreciate the ABC are being urged by Friends of the ABC to phone their Coalition politicians.

"ABC Friends launched its 'Phone your Coalition Politician Day' in response to pending cuts to the ABC," said Glenys Stradijot, ABC Friends National spokesperson. 

Speculation over the future of ABC Classic FM continues

ABC Classic FM station manager Richard Buckham has this morning spoken to radioinfo, trying once again to allay fears over the station disappearing from the airwaves. Staff and listeners became concerned in August when announcers were removed from overnight programming and since then, speculation about the station and it's future under Abbott Government budget cuts has continued.

ABC Staff fear doubling of efficiency cuts

The review into ABC and SBS efficiency is on the verge of suggesting cuts of more than $100 million year on year, according to union sources.

The MEAA says cuts are expected to "dramatically exceed the cuts of $120 million over four years in the Federal Government’s budget," and staff have called for more transparency in the efficiency process.

GetUp campaigns against ABC cuts

Advocacy group GetUp has begun a campaign to remind Tony Abbot about his pre-election promise not to cut the ABC or SBS.

Following this week's budget, the campaign has expanded to also include education and health.

GetUp gathered supporters to form a human ABC logo, which it is now using as a banner on its twitter page, and has also bought mobile outdoor advertising to get its message across.

ABC Managing Director Mark Scott has appeared on Raphael Epstein’s Drive program on ABC774 Melbourne, to respond to the cuts imposed on the ABC in last night’s budget.

He explained how the cuts were not foreshadowed before the election and that the result of budget cuts will be a reduction in services and content.

He also commented on how the ABC had been using savings to increase efficiency, the importance of the now cut Australian Network, and the importance of a fully functioning ABC to the community.
