Broadcasting Services Act amendments to change news and trigger event rules

Communications Minister Paul Fletcher presented the second reading of the Regional Commercial Radio and Other Measures Bill to Parliament this week.

The purpose of the Bill is to amend the Broadcasting Services Act 1992  to relax some elements of the local content obligations.

The CBAA has told radioinfo it is aware that the ACMA has contacted a number of stations around Australia regarding their representation of their station’s sponsorship opportunities as advertising.

Following recent amendments to the Broadcasting Services Act, a number of community stations in four states have received letters from the ACMA alleging “several complaints” about their services, and stating that while no formal investigation will take place, the station should consider matters raised.

At the end of last month two amendments to the Broadcasting Services Act passed the Senate, and now move to the House of Representatives.

Last year, when Media Reform was a hot topic, three Senators raised a number of issues about broadcasting that they wanted addressed in return for their support of changes to broadcasting legislation.
