Bloopers book contributions: Open Line a fad, will never last

As stories for the upcoming book Is This Thing On keep flooding in, we can share a few more magic moments from the history of radio bloopers this week, thanks to Radio Yesteryear’s Bruce Carty, who has contributed some famous radio quotes: In 1922, Thomas Edison said “The radio craze will soon end.” And this comment from an ex 2GB executive, before 2GB became the number one station in Sydney with an open line format:  “I think open line radio is a fad thing.  I don’t believe that it will become a dominant form of programming in Sydney.”    What did John Singleton say about 2CH listeners before he bought the station? And what radio family had three siblings on air up and down the NSW north coast in the 1990s?

Carty is nearly finished his own book on the history of all Australian A.M. stations. Here’s some more beauties:

“I am sick and tired of rating number one on a station that rates number four”.
On air quote from John Laws on 2UW.

Mike Carlton was suspended from 2GB for saying on air that he was “Pissed as a fart”.

Tony Withers on 2SM once said “Rock ‘n’ Roll will be dead within nine months”.  Tony later became the Chief Announcer at Rock ‘n’ Roll station Radio Caroline.

John Singleton once described 2CH listeners as “The type of people who read the funeral notices in the newspaper to see if they are dead”.  Two years later he bought the station.

Jack Davey, on air while visiting 3HA, was supposed to say “The best tea shop in Horsham”.  He actually said “The best whoreshop in teasham”.

On 2GN, one announcer, instead of saying “demand the best in bread”, said ” demand the breast in bed”.

And did you guess?

What radio family had three siblings on air up and down the NSW north coast in the 1990s? This from another contributor last week:

It was a day when all you could hear from Grafton to Taree was a “Daniel Voice”. In the late 90’s 3 brothers were all in Radio. Terry, Richard and Glenn Daniel all had jobs in different Radio stations, however during the breakfast show right up and down the NSW coast, all you could hear was a Daniel.

Terry was breakfast announcer at 2CS Coffs Harbour.

Richard was doing breakfast at 2MC Port Macquarie just down the coast.

Glenn was the 2WS breakfast news reader, and this news service was taken by both 2CS and 2MC.

So for 4 hours each morning, not only was the announcer on air a Daniel, but every news bulletin was also read by a Daniel. At the time the news papers did a big story on it.

Now a days Terry runs his own computer company still in Coffs Harbour, Richard is Manager at an international Media organisation called CVC on the Sunshine Coast and Glenn is National News Director and back reading breakfast news at 2WS. They all still love Radio.

And a note on the health of Glenn Daniel, who recently went into hospital for heart surgery. Workmates report that Glenn had a slight setback after the surgery but is now recovering steadily.
