NZ radio stations to pay tribute to Beatles anniversary

1st June 1967 was the release date of one of the biggest concept albums of the 1960's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles.

To coincide with the release by The Beatles of a suite of lavishly presented ‘Sgt. Pepper’ Anniversary Edition packages, several local radio stations across New Zealand will be playing a special 1 hour programme to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album's release.

If you haven’t been Beatled out from last week’s 50th anniversary celebration specials on all sorts of stations across Australia, the best may yet be to come.
For a week, starting next Tuesday, ABC Radio will launch a pop-up radio station with all things to do with that once again famous 50th anniversary of the Beatles concert tour of Australia in June 1964. It will also be available from ABC Extra via mobile on the ABC Radio App, streamed online at and on digital radio.

50 years ago The Beatles touched down in Australia on Wednesday June 11, 1964 with Bob Rogers on board. At 37, he was already well past the demographic of the Fab Four and their fan base.
Working for 2SM at the time, the equivalent of KIIS FM today, the station had sent him to London the week before to get the jump on the competition. It was a costly exercise –  but worth every penny – still paying off for Rogers 50 years later.

Radio Legend Ian "Nicko" Nicholls, caught up with the Beatles at Melbourne's Southern Cross Hotel on June 14 1964 when he was working for 3XY. 

With microphone in hand, Nicko got to sit down and record one on one interviews with John, Paul, Ringo and George.
