APN Interim Results: 'Our decision to back radio was right'

77% profit increase.

APN News & Media Limited today released its results for the six months ended 30 June 2014. Statutory net profit after tax was up 77% to $22.6m.

APN's acquisition of the remaining 50% of Australian Ratio Network (ARN) and The Radio Network (TRN) in February contributed significantly to this profit growth.

Radio networks top list of mobile optimised publishers in Australia

On a list compiled by Nielsen of Australia’s Top 30 mobile optimised publishers, FM radio networks take out three of the four top places with only Mamamia spoiling a clean sweep by coming in second behind SCA.

ARN is listed at number three followed by Nova Entertainment at four. Radio easily beats the mobile sites of online giants Optus, Yahoo 7 and NINEMSN.

ARN recently introduced a new Employee Value Proposition, in the company’s words, “Reinvigorate the organisation’s culture and generate excitement about the new direction of the business.” 

To make it all work they’ve appointed Marissa Daras to the position of National People and Performance Director.

Marissa brings 15 years’ experience and a wealth of knowledge to ARN, acquired from both local and international HR Management roles.

Selina Nisanyan fills the newly created role of Digital Marketing Manager, where she will be tasked with optimizing ARN’s digital marketing campaign activity across display, social, and search platforms, as well as responsibility for end to end brand management of iHeartRadio and initiatives for the Edge.

It’s a curious thing. Up until now, Sydney was the frontline of radio wars in Australia. Not that it’s without some skirmishes. But following the major upheaval of Kyle and Jackie O defecting to KIIS it all seems to have settled down. K & J have taken most of it’s listeners with them from 2Day-FM TO KIIS, leaving the former with the audience share that Mix 106.5 used to have – which is not much.

We all know the Australian Radio Network ARN but you may be less than familiar with the Arabian Radio Network ARN based in Dubai which has a large contingent of Australia expats working in key positions.
In any case, the two ARNs got together last week to help facilitate the Kyle and Jackie O tour of Dubai.

ARN’s  Shaun Malzard (Creative Director) and Daryl Missen (Producer) have received a coveted Finalist Award status (the top 10% of all entries) in the 2014 New York Festivals, the competition for the World’s Best Advertising™.
The entry was for Melbourne Client Protect-A-Child who develop and sell a software package that allows parents to actively monitor who is communicating with their children online. Audio below.

Having bought out Clear Channel’s half share in ARN earlier this year, APN revealed the bigger picture to the Macquarie Australia Conference last Friday.

The presentation from CEO, Michael Miller showed that in a nine month period since August 2013 the company went from just 30% of its major assets fully owned to 75% now.

While publishing still represents 44% of the company’s revenue, Radio is not far behind on 42% and gaining.
