Tweeking NewsRadio's format: Russell Powell

Recent changes at ABC NewsRadio are aimed at refreshing the sound of the network as it enters its second decade.

The station, which is highly valued by media, bureaucrats and politicians for its continuous rolling news format, was recently moved into new studios at ABC Ultimo, and is now undergoing some lineup changes as the next step in its evolution.

Russell Powell spoke to radioinfo about the changes, which include him being able to sleep in for the first time in many years.

ABC NewsRadio 10 years old today

ABC NewsRadio today celebrates 10 years on air, with the best kind of birthday present a radio station could wish for – a new studio.

ABC Managing Director, Russell Balding, officially launched the new studio by remembering the efforts of its founding Manager, Ian Woolfe, and the original broadcast team, many of which are still with the network.

When NewsRadio first began it had a budget of $800,000 and a staff of 10 people. David Hill, then Managing Director, read the first news bulletin.

ABC NewsRadio Exposed

ABC NewsRadio has been fully exposed - in the foyer of the ABC.

While a new studio and work areas are being built for the increasingly popular network, NewsRadio's Sydney team is working in an interim facility in the foyer of the ABC's Ultimo building in Harris Street.

The studio and all workstations are on display to staff and visitors as they enter and exit the building.


NewsRadio Senate question

In the Senate this week Senator Alston answered a question on notice about NewsRadio. It also touched on the government’s plans for the reintroduction of the new Media Bill.

Senator Webber asked the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, upon notice, on 6 June 2003:

(1) Is the Minister aware that ABC NewsRadio cannot be heard anywhere in Western Australia outside Perth.

(2) Can the Minister advise whether there are any plans to expand the ABC NewsRadio network to cover the rural and regional areas of Western Australia.

ABC NewsRadio's 8th birthday

To mark NewsRadio's 8th anniversary (Thursday 15 August) and the ABC's 70th year as a corporation, the ABC’s youngest radio network gave listeners the chance to win a copy of ‘The Annual Reports’ double CD containing tracks of news events from 1932-2002. Listeners had to say, in 25 words or less, their most memorable moment listening to ABC NewsRadio.

NewsRadio questions at Estimates Committee

In the Senate’s recent Estimates Committee the ABA were quizzed about expansion for ABC NewsRadio. The issue revolved around who should initiate the reservation of frequencies for extra NewsRadio transmitters when Senators discussed the topic with ABA General Manager Giles Tanner. Here is what was said: Senator Tchen-... This is about the expansion of the ABC News Radio service to areas outside the metropolitan area. When I asked the ABA, they told me that this is an ABC matter. The ABC says that the ABA will not give them the frequency. Can you throw some light on this?
