ABC Melbourne: on air, online, on stage

774 ABC Melbourne presents: You’ll Miss Every Piece of Victoria, a live radio play starring Red Symons, Jon Faine, Richard Stubbs, Raf Epstein, Hilary Harper, Libbi Gorr and Grandstand’s Gerard Whateley, plus the 774-all star ‘Coconut Chorus’ and narrated by 774’s mysterious voice-over guy.

Directed by Evenings presenter Lindy Burns, for one night only on Friday 29th November the team at 774 will transport listeners to another time; the golden age of old-time radio live from the Iwaki Auditorium at ABC HQ in Southbank.

Detective Bob Bobble is on a quest to find our stolen State. You could be forgiven for thinking he sounds a lot like Rafael Epstein, host of 774’s Drive program. His assistant, Detective Dahlia Dreservich, is also on the case, but how much help is she? And why does she sound a lot like Libbi Gorr?

Lindy said: “I don’t know what prompted me to suggest that we do a radio play. A moment of madness, some vague thought of Jon Faine on sound effects with a pair of coconut halves kind of amused me, maybe I secretly long to return to my old university days. Who knows? In the end, here I am, a broadcaster, trying to mould a bunch of other broadcasters AND producers into a cohesive and entertaining radio play troupe. Yes, the words ‘herding’ and ‘cats’ have been mentioned.”

Lindy was first introduced to the world of radio through writing and performing radio plays as a drama student at the University of Newcastle.

You’ll Miss Every Piece of Victoria also features a melting pot of unusual but oh-so familiar characters in this detective drama: the slightly odd Chief Cheswick, who shares a great similarity with Richard Stubbs; the Official from a strange foreign land who may or may not be Red Symons; and is that one of Australia’s great iconic entertainers and celebrities? Or is it Jon Faine having an awkward moment in front of the microphone?

With enough plot flaws to shoot a whole State through, You’ll Miss Every Piece of Victoria was written by Jeremy Lee, Breakfast Presenter at ABC South West Victoria and former 774 Evening producer.
