In response to Senator Canavan's proposal to split the national broadcaster into rural and metro operations, ABC Friends Spokesperson Margaret Reynolds says the proposal has arisen because of the Sydney-centric nature of the organisation, but that splitting the ABC would be ineffective.

ABC Friends want urgent action on cuts

ABC Friends are urging the public to support the ABC by displaying a poster message anywhere and everywhere they can.

The group is asking people to download 'SOS ABC' posters to print and distribute.

"Spread the word and urge others to do the same," says the national campaign group.

In response to serious funding cuts inflicted on the ABC, the ABC today announced significant cuts to its service and the loss of more than 400 jobs. 

 

"We are dismayed at the damage that this government is inflicting on the ABC," said Glenys Stradijot, ABC Friends National spokesperson. 

"The Government was given no mandate to destroy the national public broadcaster. Yet that's what it has set about doing.

"The appointment of Janet Albrechtsen and Neil Brown to the panel that recommends appointments to the ABC Board is alarming," says Glenys Stradijot, ABC Friends national spokesperson.
 
The pair were appointed today by the Abbott Government, to a four-person nomination panel, which will scritinise possible board appointees, and recommend a short list to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet when vacant ABC and SBS board positions arise.

Cost-cutting review must become public say ABC Friends

Documents relating to the current review of expenditure by the ABC with a view to cost-cutting have been leaked to ABC Friends setting off alarm bells within the organisation.
 
According to spokesperson Glenys Stradijot, they are concerned that the ultimate aim is to privatise the public broadcaster and fill it with outside productions developed for commercial consumption.
 
“Leaks from Minister Turnbull’s cost-cutting review of the ABC are alarming," said Glenys Stradijot, ABC Friends national spokesperson.

“If Mr Abbott does not promptly deny reports that the Government plans to cut ABC funds he risks being branded a liar," said Glenys Stradijot, ABC Friends national spokesperson.
 
 
The SMH and Sunday Age have revealed that the Government is poised to cut ABC funding and strip the ABC of the international broadcasting service, Australia Network.
 
“Tony Abbott's promise before the election was clear. When asked, he categorically ruled out cuts to the ABC: "no cuts to the ABC and SBS".
