ABC Classic and ABC Jazz launch fund to support diverse Australian voices

ABC Classic and ABC Jazz have launched a $90,000 fund to support the creation of new music works from emerging and diverse Australian voices.

The ABC will support more than 200 Australian productions and new content ideas through its $5 million Fresh Start Fund, to help safeguard local content and creativity against the impact of COVID-19.

The fund includes support for new science and history podcasts, radio dramas and new series examining major moments and big ideas that changed Australia and the world.

Live gigs and festivals are being cancelled around the world, so to help support artists, triple j is holding a special edition of their annual Ausmusic T-Shirt Day on Friday 17 April.
 
Plus, they’ll be playing Australian music all day across the ABC’s networks including triple j, Double J, triple j Unearthed, ABC Radio, ABC Country, ABC Classic and ABC Jazz.
 

Australian generosity during the bushfires is the ABC focus for Australia Day

The ABC will focus on the communities most affected by the ongoing bushfires as part of its 2020 Australia Day coverage.
 
The ABC will broaden its Australia Day coverage this year to include stories from the regions that have been impacted by bushfires.  Emergency broadcasting, however, will remain at the core of its service for those communities still under threat from bushfires.

This weekend, ABC Classic will unveil the nation’s favourite composer, as it broadcasts the ultimate classical countdown.
 
More than 127,000 votes have been cast for 525 different composers with classical favourites such as Mozart and Vivaldi vying for top spot, with dark horses including popular film composer John Williams and Australian Elena Kats-Chernin.
 

ABC’s Classic 100 countdown is now open

Voting is now open for ABC Classic’s Classic 100, the ultimate classical music countdown, and this year they want to know who is your favourite composer.

ABC Classic Weekend Breakfast presenter Ed Ayres says, “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to champion the composer that means the most to you. Make sure you vote so that your composer gets the place they deserve in the countdown – after all the joy they’ve given, it’s the least you can do!”

ABC Classic's festival of female composers

ABC Classic will celebrate Women’s Day by dedicating four days to the music of female composers across the past 1000 years.

From Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 March inclusive, there will be 96 hours of music by women from the medieval period to today including music recorded especially by the ABC, and on International Women’s Day, Friday 8 March, programs will be presented by a line-up of all-female presenters.
