98five can broadcast for another 30 years thanks to listeners

A new $72,000 98five listener-funded transmitter has been officially switched on up in the Perth Hills  by guest of honour Senator Nick Goiran MLC.

98five’s previous transmitter was installed when the station started broadcasting on Australia Day in 1988, and has been operating nonstop for more than 27 years.

Last year during a ‘Hope for Christmas’ appeal, 98five asked for its listeners to donate funds for much needed updated equipment.

The new transmitter was given the name ‘Hope’ by listeners to symbolise the next 30 years of broadcasting the family-friendly Christian Station’s positive message of hope to listeners across Perth and WA.

The new transmitter will cover as far north as Lancelin, more than 120km away from Perth’s CBD, down to Mandurah and as far east as Northam.

Mr Goiran said he’s impressed with the generosity of 98five’s listeners.

“We have to thank all of the listeners who have given all of those donations last year and all of the work everyone at 98five has done. Without that it wouldn’t be possible,” Mr Goiran said. “I think 98five is a station that’s good for little ears and for big ears.”

“G-rated radio is what families are crying out for so we appreciate all of the work that 98five and the whole team put together and if this gets it going for another couple of decades then that’s got to be a good thing.”

98five general manager Bevan Jones said he’s grateful for all the support the Station receives from both listeners and local government members:

“We’ve been able to go to the people (with our Station’s needs) and the people responded last November. We said we need $72,000 for a new transmitter and bang, we had it. The people of Perth have just been amazing, which shows we don’t exist unless people donate.”
