4GG’s 45 year reunion

“In those days there was a lot of show and some business. Today there’s a lot of business and still a bit of show,” Nick Scott.

45 years ago 4GG opened on the Gold Coast, beginning a media revolution that now sees the tourist mecca as a highly competitive media market and one of the most lucrative non-metropolitan cities in the country.

4GG is now known as Gold FM and is owned by Southern Cross Austereo. A year ago the station moved into brand new premises at Broadbeach. Nick Scott has recently returned to the station as General Manager.

To mark the station’s 45th birthday, former staff gathered for a reunion last weekend.

The station, originally based at Benowa, was renowned for its showbiz reputation, attracting all the best stars from around the globe. In 1990 it was bought by new owners and changed its name several times before becoming Gold FM, now part of the Austereo Southern Cross network.

Reunion organiser and former employee Judith Ferber told the Gold Coast Bulletin the station was an amazing place to work: ‘‘It was such a great working environment, we all loved our time there and radio was a much more important medium. Barry Humphries and Robert Gourley were just two of the stars.’’

Former staff who attended the reunion included Nick Scott, Ian Cousins, Rod Brice, Phil Brice (Rod’s brother, who travelled from London to be at the event), Gary Gilby, Rhonda Sharratt, Maurie Service, David Burton, Brad Turner, John Jones, Dave Andrews, Greg Newman and Ralph Taylor.
