Smooth Jazz narrowcaster begins in Sydney

A new Smooth Jazz station “has discreetly appeared on the 87.6 FM call sign. SmoothjazzFM is “Sydney’s full-time jazz station, 24 hours a day, airing a newer music format that is rating highly around the world.”

Robert Iezzi of Robert’s Media, the company behind the station, has a strong background in TV & Radio, entertainment, and publishing and a youthful drumming career.

“My personal liking of jazz led to a commercial decision”, he says. “I’ve always thought Sydney’s diverse audience was ready for an alternative to what the commercial stations provide… pop music that’s much the same, dance and heavy metal, and of course talkback radio. Early signs are that we’re on the right track going by the positive phone calls and lots of emails we’re receiving.“

Robert’s Media have done no surveys “but has talked in detail with their many callers. Smooth Jazz music emerged as mostly accepted by the over-25s – male and female – many identifying themselves as professionals and creatives.”

The Smooth Jazz format is also “spiced with featurettes and news on Sydney’s many lifestyle, recreational and leisure attractions right around our city, Eastern Suburbs, the beaches and Maroubra.”

“The philosophy here is that resident Sydneysiders themselves should be reminded how alive their city is, informed on all the latest events – not just jazz events – and encouraged to get out and about, and enjoy Sydney to the full.”

Robert’s Media has made “a major investment in networking three FM frequencies from Darling Harbour to Kings Cross and to Maroubra to reach young people and families in this well-populated broadcast area with a strong Sydney lifestyle message. In addition this entertaining but informative program enhances tourism by putting international and interstate visitors in the contemporary picture on all the Harbour City’s fixed and changing attractions and events.”
