It’s been 20 years since the first of triple j’s Hottest 100 annual countdowns. So what is the Hottest 100 of 20 years of Hottest 100s? More than 940,000 votes were cast, over 20 days, by triple j listeners, who for the most part grew up with the music on of the past 20 years and knew little before that.
The retrospective data of a poll spanning 20 years also reveals which songs are considered true classics, songs that may have initially been overlooked and then become cult favourites, and more recent songs which are already considered masters. The earliest track to make the cut was Nirvana’s 1993 classic ‘Heart Shaped Box’, while the most recent song is Of Monsters & Men’s 2012 instant hit ‘Little Talks’.
Taking out the top spot is Oasis’ 1995 hit ‘Wonderwall’. The song, which also topped triple j’s Hottest 100 poll in 1996, is arguably Oasis’ best song, a timeless classic that sent Oasis’s career to stratospheric heights. Noel Gallagher’s worship of the Beatles is no secret – he lifted the song’s title from George Harrison’s 1968 LP Wonderwall Music. Later covered by everyone from Jay-Z to Ryan Adams (the latter being the only version which earned Noel’s approval), ‘Wonderwall’ proved a massive worldwide hit.
- Several artists had multiple entries, including Daft Punk, Silverchair and The Killers with three songs each, followed by Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Gotye, Jebediah, Jeff Buckley, MGMT, Powderfinger, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead with two songs each.
- 14 previous #1 Hottest 100 songs appear in the list by artists Oasis, Angus & Julia Stone, Augie March, Franz Ferdinand, Gotye, Jet, Kings Of Leon, The Whitlams, The Cranberries, Spiderbait, Queens Of The Stone Age, Powderfinger, Muse and Mumford & Sons, proving their longevity.
- Voters also showed appreciation for artists’ early work by voting for 30 songs from debut albums, including Jeff Buckley, Silverchair, The Strokes, The Killers, Mumford & Sons, The Living End and Florence & the Machine.
- 1997 stood out as the year with the most popular songs with 11 songs from the countdown released that year.
- There are 49 songs from the 1990s (1993 – 1999) and 51 songs from the 2000s (2000 – 2012).
- 41 songs were penned by American artists, 29 by Aussies and 25 by UK artists, with three songs from France and one each for Ireland and Iceland.
- Five bands have siblings in them, six songs have an animal in the title, four songs feature other worldly creatures and eight songs are reportedly about politics.
