The only time I hear from Kyle is when we’re doing well: Brendan Jones

It was a day to schmooze the paparazzi and tell them yet again that WS-FM is now the number one FM station in Sydney in case they missed the news after Survey Two. Or as the station’s Content Director Charlie Fox (below left) told the hand-picked crowd of scribes, record company execs and ad agency types, “We’re the number two commercial station in Sydney after 2GB, but that doesn’t matter because their audience is so old.

“However we don’t get a lot of attention from media because we don’t have shock jocks – we‘re not saying awful things about the boat people- we’re not saying awful things about 14 year old girls or upsetting anybody. It’s a family friendly station,” said Charlie as he introduced the station’s amiable breakfast duo, Jonesy and Amanda.

charliefox_267They then took the stage at Jimmy Buffet’s ‘island kitsch’ Margaritaville Bar, and Amanda, who spoke first and most told the crowd, who by now had tasted copious quantities of the bar’s headline drink, “We’ve been under the radar for so long we kinda just wanted to say here’s who we are and here’s what we do. The other day someone said to me something about being a western suburbs station. We’re happy to embrace our heritage, but here’s some stats for you: 25% of our audience is in Sydney’s west. 35% are in the south and south west. 23% are in the north and 17% in the east and inner city. So we are well and truly a metropolitan station.”

Although Jonesy and Amanda are still slightly behind Kyle and Jackie O on 2Day FM this is the first time in the eight years that J & A have been at WS that the station has been number one.

“I think the longevity of us is starting to kick in finally,” said Amanda, “They say the radio industry is like a super tanker. Once you’ve lost an audience you don’t notice it until they’ve really moved off and it’s very hard to get them back. Hopefully, once we’ve changed listening habits then it goes in our favour for some time. Hopefully we won’t be the Costa Concordia.”

Jonesy wrapped it up by saying, “The only time I hear from Kyle is when we are doing well. And he’s texted me about three times in the last two days.”
