Music tastes are changing all the time: Nova music director

Insights of a “gifted music manager with a natural ear.”

Nova 106.9FM Brisbane has formally appointed Georgina Ingham-Myers to the position of Music and Operations Manager. She speaks to radioinfo about picking music for a station like Nova

Ingham-Myers has been filling in for long-serving Nova 106.9FM Music Director, Kate Casey, while Casey has been on maternity leave. She will now replace Kate Casey permanently, as Casey has made the decision to return to work on a part-time basis.

Nova’s program director Jay Walkerden has told radioinfo she “has already proven she is a gifted Music and Operations Manager with a natural ear.”  He is grateful that Ingham-Myers will continue the exceptional standard that Kate Casey established and maintained for Nova since its inception, which saw her win two ACRAs for Best Music Director in 2008 and 2009.

Ingham-Myers talks to us about choosing the Nova play list and which artists she has her ear tuned to:

“When it comes to choosing songs for the Nova playlist I never favour a particular style of song. We listen to it and if we like it, we’ll play it. But it’s our listeners who determine what we play at the end of the day.

Music tastes are changing all the time. Dance music still has its place on our airwaves but our listeners are also loving a softer form of rock, you might call it folk/rock e.g. Of Monsters and Men, Lumineers, Matt Corby, Vance Joy etc, which can make for an interesting challenge to get our song list right!

When I listen to a song I imagine how it would sound in our current playlist. If you were driving your car, listening at work or hearing it in a shop would you turn it up? How would it make you feel? Would you hum or sing along? Or would you change the station?! My job is to make sure that last choice doesn’t happen!

One of the best parts of my job is when I discover something new and add a song before any other commercial radio station – and then watching the song become a hit. I’m not always going to get it right but it’s awesome when you do!

At the moment I’m loving Robert De Long, Capital Cities, Grouplove, Naughty Boy and Bliss n Eso.

Bastille and Lorde have also been big for us and sound great on air.

And I’m a massive Katy Perry fan so I’m glad she’s back with a cracking pop song!

We’ve been big supporters of Vance Joy and his single Riptide is now killing it! His EP is awesome and has another couple of radio hits. He’s got a massive career ahead of him.”
