Hinch to plead not guilty to contempt

Former radio broadcaster Derryn Hinch says he is being used as a test case against social media for his part in the online actvitiy that proliferated around the Jill Meagher murder in Melbourne.

Hinch has appeared in the Victorian Supreme Court today. He was charged with two counts of contempt in June.

He used his Human Headline blog and Twitter account to reveal the criminal history of Jill Meagher’s killer, Adrian Bayley.

It is alleged the comments breached a Supreme Court suppression order.

Derryn Hinch has told reporters outside the court he was being used as an example.

“In the Jill Meagher case I think what social media did was some of the worse things I have seen in a court case, and some people went way beyond what was legally and morally responsible,” he says.

I wasn’t one of those people. I am going to plead not guilty – I was not in contempt of court.

Hinch has previously served time in jail and in home detention for breaching suppression orders during radio broadcasts and on his website..
