ARN

The survey giveth and the survey taketh away. We doubt that folk at WS-FM will be too amused by this mangled old line, but it must be frustrating to have basked in the glow of being the number 1 FM station in Sydney for just one survey before dropping back down the ranks by a hefty 1.5 share points. Still it was better news for MIX 106.5 which managed to put on 1.3 with good gains in Breakfast and in Drive.

Melbourne was a much better and more consistent story (programmers love consistency) with both GOLD and Mix 101.1 consolidating their positions. Also consolidating its position was 97.3FM in Brisbane which put on another 0.9 at #1 spot outright. ARN is also blessed with ownership of the leading station in Adelaide, MIX 102.3 as well as a handy AM station, Cruise 1323.

Southern Cross Austereo

Craig Bruce was in an ebullient mood with today’s results, while Perth had yet to be announced, every station, in both the Today and Triple M streams went up or at least held firm.

Best of all was that the flagship, 2DayFM regained it’s number one FM crown – well not so much regained as WS-FM faded away with a significant loss of listeners. But being back at number one was where SCA had felt it was always meant to be.

Most satisfying is that the Triple M brand is getting stronger and stronger. In Melbourne it’s up to an 8.3 share which is about  as good as (as far as we can remember) as it has ever gotten. At this stage, however, it is hard to say whether the big investment into the NRL has made any impact on the Brisbane and Sydney stations.

Consolidation is again the best word to use for smoothfm. Up 0.3 in Sydney and 0.2 in Melbourne, both looking towards a 6.0 share is a very happy place to be for the station/s celebrating their first birthday.

But Nova’s where the money is – if not in revenue, then certainly in costs. Overall, the brand was steady with a small gain in Sydney, a bit of a hiccup in Melbourne, a good gain in Brisbane and a blinder in Adelaide.

Fairfax

Much to the surprise of the anti-2UE claque, the station managed a small but important rise driven by a 0.8 gain in breakfast with Dicko and Sarah whose new style of show is now less in competition with old rival Alan Jones (who went up by 1.3) than with Jonesy and Amanda who went down by 1.3.

In Melbourne, 3AW not so much bounced back as clawed its way up by 0.1 to maintain its market leadership with a good gain in breakfast and controversial recruit Tom Elliott holding on to double digits and the number two Drive spot.

In Brisbane, 4BC eased back a little while in Perth, 6PR dropped 1.4

ABC

Other than the shock resignation of 702’s breakfast host, Adam Spencer, for ABC local radio it was a fairly uneventful survey. Both Sydney and Melbourne were steady while Brisbane was down and Perth was up a tad.

The highlight was Adelaide where 891 leapfrogged FIVEaa into second place with a 1.1 gain.

Now with summer over, the months in which triple j traditionally thrives, it fell by various degrees across the board in every market.
